A good education and equality of opportunity help to give our young people important choices when starting out on their educational and career pathways.
In order to help each student develop the skills, attitudes and understanding to become global citizens we must ensure that these are underpinned by the very best possible careers advice. Equally it is important that students are aware of the increasing number of choices open to them. It is essential that they keep their options open for as long as possible.
At Plume Academy, we have an ongoing commitment to the very best Information, advice and guidance for all students. (as recognised by our RoQa quality award). At all transition and option-choice points, students and parents/carers are well supported by staff by means of information evenings/assemblies/subject guidance talks and option processes explained.
Together we work to help our students to:
An integral part of this process is PlumeCareers which offers and coordinates a wide variety of information and activities. We work in partnership with an independent and impartial careers guidance company, Directions IAG Ltd who provide us with a range of activities. Louise Brazier, our careers adviser, visits the Academy twice a week and attends most parents’ events. Louise offers students an impartial and confidential service to help them think about their options both in Plume Academy and beyond, be it our own Plume College, further education at a local college, higher education, training or employment. Each student is offered their own action plan which can be shared with staff and parents if requested.
As a Community Academy we put great emphasis on partnership working and take full advantage of working closely with the local business community where we have well established links built up over many years helping providing work related learning opportunities outside the classroom for example workplace visits, work experience placements, work shadowing and apprenticeships. This is complemented by regular visits and workshops held in the Academy which enables local businesses to pass on useful and up to date information about specific industry sectors and the local labour market. We are also very thankful for the time set aside to come into the classroom and share their own career story by our PlumeAlumni.
We play a full part in joint initiatives with Maldon District Council, Essex Employability and Skills Board and the national S.T.E.M. programme and also stage an annual Careers Fair which is always extremely well intended.
