Year 7 and 8 science students turn their hands to alchemy
Autumn term science club has seen our budding scientists make bird feeders, construct brain hats, burn food stuff to see how much energy they contain, create rainbow flames, indulge in some alchemy turning copper coins into 'gold', form plastic from milk, and we are currently in the process of producing bouncy eggs!
There are always lots of experiments and fun to be had in room M21 at Mill Road Campus on Wednesdays from 3.15pm - 4.15pm for anyone who wishes to join in please come along!
Ex Plume Student Provides Expert Financial Advice and Guidance
On Thursday 9th November financial advisor Martyn Halls, an ex-Plume student visited the Academy to run some sessions with our Year 12 Prince's Trust students to assist with their Managing Money unit of coursework. The students carried out sessions on budgeting and fraud and got to question Martyn about his job and what he does on a daily basis.
The sessions were a great success and really gave the students an opportunity to get to grips with things that will prove useful once out in the world of work.

Plume Academy Remembers
Head Girl Harriet Phillips and Head Boy Mo Shorney represented Plume Academy on Remembrance Day this year and laid a wreath of red poppies in Maldon at the foot of the St Peters Church memorial; in order to honour our armed forces members who have died in the line of duty since the end of the First World War. Plume Academy has a long and proud tradition of taking part in this ceremony and we are very pleased that Hattie and Mo were there to take part and represent us all on this very important day.
Year 7 Science Students Let Their Imagination Run Wild
During the first weeks of the Autumn term, Year 7 students have been studying one of the fundamental principles of Biology- the building blocks of all life- 'The Cell'.
Teachers at MRC assigned a project that enabled the students to create a 3D model of a cell. The model needed to include the various structures within a cell, their function plus the cell could be plant or animal based.
The students let their imagination run wild on this project, creating cells from plasticine, Lego bricks, papier mâché and even food! The time, effort and inventiveness that has gone into making this amazing work, is truly commendable and a huge well done to all. The science faculty are very proud to share this work with you all and if you are visiting MRC, take a little look at the wonderful display in the MRC foyer cabinet
Plume Academy's Enthusiastic Year 13 Biologists Visit Flatford Mill
Plume Academy's enthusiastic Year 13 Biologists welcomed the opportunity to engage with an outdoor classroom experience during the final weeks of October 2023
They visited the beautiful Flatford Mill, on the banks of the River Stour, which is one of the first and original field study centre set up in the UK during the 1940's. It is also unchanged from the wonderful, timeless painting the Hay Wain by John Constable.
During the two packed days of ecological studies, the sun managed to shine occasionally, followed by dark cloud and heavy rain. However, it didn't stop the students from collecting an array of data from woodlands in sunlight and shade, coupled with wading river sampling. The data that was collected and a write up of the practical activities will be a quality addition to the students practical endorsement qualification and hopefully a memorable experience too. A big thank you to Mrs Williams, Miss Saunders and especially Mrs Heslop that not only helped plan and organise the two-day event but, also transported us all there on both days-

Plume Academy students go to The Ben Kinsella Trust Choices and Consequences Exhibition
A small group of students went along to The Ben Kinsella Trust Choices and Consequences Exhibition recently. Ben Kinsella was just 16 years old when he was stabbed to death on 29th June, 2008 in Islington, London. After Ben’s death, his family set up the Ben Kinsella Trust to speak out about knife crime and campaign for change. The immersive exhibition space is used to deliver anti-knife crime workshops aimed at young people aged between 10-18. It was an opportunity for our students to learn about the dangers of knife crime and the emotions associated with living the experience in a safe space.
Cooper Rushen wins an amazing 12th consecutive British Championship
On Sunday the 8th of October Cooper raced in Kings Lynn to take part in his 12th British title race riding speedway. He rode his 250cc bike over 4 races, finishing with a sudden death final which he ended up winning, to gain his 12th consecutive title.
He is now British Champion yet again!
Cooper has ridden for Great Britain in world championship and the European pairs which has taken him to 17 countries over the course of this year.

Our Superb National Poetry Day Competition Winners
Pictured above with our Joint Heads of Academy and Mrs Russell are our very proud and extraordinarily talented Plume Academy and College poets, representing Mill Road Campus, Fambridge Road Campus and finally our Sixth Form College.
Teacher of English and second in the faculty Mrs Russell said, 'we were very pleased to award our winners of the National Poetry Day competition with a certificate, badge and a £25 voucher to be used at Maldon Books in the High Street. We had many fantastic entries, making selecting the winners extremely challenging! Our eventual winners submitted superb poems that reflected the 'Refuge' stimulus set and over seen by the English Faculty this year.'

Braxted Park - Lets talk trash
The Sunshine Tour Championships 2023 held at Hickstead recently, saw superstar Rebecca Powell in year 7 perform amazingly well in her show jumping classes, taking three wins in a group consisting of between sixty to ninety competitors. Rebecca then went on to win the ultimate prize in one show jumping category, securing the much coveted accolade of Supreme Champion!

Sixty Plume Academy pupils who were featured in the English Faculty Outstanding Pupil Workbook with Mrs Clark and Mr Baster as they received their very own free copy. It was a delight to provide pupils with an anthology of their fantastic work produced last academic year.
Callum Marshall The Optimist: the most popular children's dinghy in the World
Most of the world's best sailors started in the Optimist dinghy and went on through other classes all the way to the Olympics.
Callum Marshall in Year 7 at Plume Academy who is already in the GB Development Squad finished a fantastic 6th with 65 competitors in his event. This builds on a strong performance at the Nationals in Weymouth in early August. A brilliant outcome and outstanding effort despite no wind which all competitors found extremely challenging.
The UK Summer Championships 2023 was held at Plas Heli the Welsh National Sailing Academy and Events Centre, Pwllheli, North Wales on the 9 - 10 September 2023.
Callum has already been invited to attend the GB winter performance training as a direct result of his UK ranking position. In the early July, Callum enjoyed training with the GB team in Portugal and completing both a training and race event.

An Outstanding set of Examinations Results!
As a direct result, and despite the aforementioned challenges, many of our students have surpassed their target grades and the increases highlighted above provide direct evidence to support this.
Furthermore, the usual high number of students have applied for a place at university, with significant numbers applying for, and subsequently securing places at, the highly sought after and prestigious ‘Russell Group’ universities.
We are also absolutely delighted that every single student who applied to go to university has secured a place with the vast majority being at their first choice.

Plume, Maldon’s Community Academy, is, once again, celebrating superb post-16 examination results which very much reflect the hard work and tremendous commitment shown by our students’ and staff over the course of the past two years. This is especially the case given the fact that they had to endure such a disruptive first year of their respective programmes due to the COVID-19 pandemic – a period that also massively affected their entire two-year GCSE lessons and courses.
Our Year 13 post-16 results show that the academy secured improved outcomes in a number of areas including a virtually perfect overall A*-E pass rate and a superb A*-C pass rate, including 15 A*s. Of the 24 A Level subjects we currently offer at post 16, only one did not achieve a 100% pass rate, and in all seven non-A Level subjects, the pass rate was a remarkable 100%.
Understandably, we are immensely proud in terms of how well our College students have performed, especially when taking into consideration, and as previously mentioned, the resilience they had to show not just during their post-16 courses but for their entire GCSE programme too.
It is also extremely important to note that Plume Academy continued to offer an extremely broad, rich and varied choice of courses with the bespoke needs of every student at the forefront of the ongoing high-quality information, advice and guidance provided to them.
Carl Wakefield, the outgoing Executive Principal of Plume Academy, said, “I am exceptionally proud of the results achieved by our College students this year, particularly given the massively disruptive period they have had to work through and the unrelenting resilience they have had to show.”
“I am also extremely pleased that virtually all of our Year 13 students have secured their first choice university place, with a number also securing high quality apprenticeships at reputable organisations both locally as well as in the city of London.”
The results achieved by our Year 12 cohort were also excellent and only bode well for next summer.”
He added “The bottom line is that all of this cannot happen without a huge amount of hard work being put in by our students whilst working in collaboration with a fully committed and highly skilled team of staff, who have also been phenomenal throughout the past four years. When combined with the support provided by our students’ parents and carers, it is clear to see as to why we have achieved such an outstanding set of outcomes.”
“It has been an absolute privilege to work alongside them all and I am immensely proud as to what they have secured as a collective. I wish them a bright, happy and ultimately, successful future.”
John Hallam, the academy’s post-16 lead and Assistant Vice Principal added, “I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate our fantastic College students on an excellent set of results.
It’s been wonderful to witness so many delighted students collecting results at the academy this morning, and it's great to see so many students securing the outcomes that will enable them to progress onto their first-choice university, college or apprenticeship.”
Mr Hallam continued, “As an academy, we are exceptionally proud of the achievements of our post-16 students and, as this area’s senior leader for Plume College, it has been a privilege to work alongside staff, parents and carers to ensure that all of our students achieve their very best.”
Mr Hallam finished by stating, “I would like to wish all of our Year 13 leavers the best of luck as they progress to university, college, apprenticeships or employment and thank them for their hard work and commitment during their time at Plume Academy.“

Another Week of Excellent Student Outcomes!
As was the case with our post-16 students last week, we are delighted to announce that the GCSE class of 2023 have also secured an excellent set of examination results.
The year group were awarded a superb 398 9-7 (formerly A*-A) grades with an equally impressive 19 students securing 8 or more 9-7 (A*-A) grades. Furthermore, the year group also secured an outstanding 100% pass rate in 18 subjects.
A significant number of Plume Academy’s students secured extremely impressive results including:

Benjamin Frost who achieved an unprecedented 9 grade 9s, 1 grade 8, 1 grade 7 and 1 grade 6.

Poppy Brown achieved an exceptional 8 grade 9s, 2 grade 8s and 2 grade 7s.

Harry Webber who achieved 8 grade 9s, 2 grade 8s, and a grade 7.

Rachel Monk who achieved 6 grade 9s, 2 grade 8s, 1 grade 7, 2 grade 6s and a Distinction.

Our vocational and resit students also achieved extremely good outcomes once again this year with almost all of the cohort securing the required grades to move onto the next stage of their education, employment or training.
Carl Wakefield, the outgoing Executive Principal, said:
“I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of the class of 2018-2023 as well as their team of teaching and support staff for achieving these fantastic set of results. This is for a whole host of reasons but especially given the national context since early 2020, and the subsequent unprecedented times they all had to navigate through – a period that spanned from the halfway point of Year 8 to well into the first year of their GCSEs. Still, successfully navigate their way through it they did and with today’s results providing definitive evidence to support this.
It is always difficult to refer to specific results and individual students but if I had to, the sheer amount of 9-7 grades achieved by the year group, especially at a time when the Government’s agenda is to significantly reduce them, as well as the number of subjects securing a 100% pass rate, are two particularly pleasing outcomes. Nevertheless, this is without taking anything away from all the other significant successes achieved by this terrific group of students and their outstanding team of skilled and unrelentingly committed staff of course.”
Mr Wakefield went on to say, “This year group of nearly 300 students were also impeccable in terms of their behaviour, attitude and approach throughout their entire six week summer examination period. Also, whilst attending their Prom, which 90% of the year group did, during their final leavers’ assembly and on their shirt-signing day.
To those students and their respective families who will be moving onto pastures new from this point onwards, I only wish them all an enjoyable, happy and ultimately, successful future. They will always remain as members of the Plume Family, however, and must never forget this.
To those students who will be staying on to study in our College, my remaining colleagues I know very much look forward to working alongside them over the next two years and as they strive to achieve the outcomes that will undoubtedly see them secure a place at their first choice university, on a high-quality apprenticeship or progress into the world of work.”
Mr Wakefield concluded by saying, “It has been the honour of my professional life to have worked alongside such fantastic students, staff and families these past eight years, and I am delighted that my tenure comes to an end on the past two weeks’ worth of such pleasing Post-16 and GCSE results.”
Craig Farrow, the year group’s Head of Year added, “Firstly, I am very proud that they achieved what they deserved. Furthermore, they are also an incredible bunch of individuals.”
Mr Farrow added, “I’m going to miss being their Head of Year but I’m pleased that they are now able to move onto their next stages as a result of their hard, and as Mr Wakefield alluded to, their ongoing resilience.”

Aaron Smith Year 9
Aaron has been nominated as being the driving force and team leader of the 10X group. This is a group of students working as a mini company within the school. This group with Aaron as the team leader have achieved such a lot in a short space of time. The group started taking part in a national challenge but kept the business going beyond the challenge as they enjoyed the experience so much. The group have been so supportive of one another, learnt where every group member’s strengths are, and used this to aid the success of their small business both inside and outside the Plume Academy.
The enthusiasm Aaron has showed throughout has been infectious for anyone around him. He has diligently and meticulously put 100% into everything that he has done for the business, and indeed secured sponsorship and funding from a local Made in Maldon business project.
A staff member commented, “It has been an honour for me to work with such a dedicated, conscientious, enthusiastic, determined and willing group of young people.” A credit to the Plume indeed!
Alfie Brace Year 10
Alfie deserves to be nominated for this award due to his exceptional dedication and commitment to his education. He consistently goes above and beyond in Computer Science, surpassing expectations by actively seeking additional revision beyond the required material. Not only does he exhibit an outstanding work ethic, but Alfie also demonstrates an incredible level of support and encouragement towards his peers. He is always there to cheer on his classmates, motivating them to achieve their highest potential. Alfie's genuine enthusiasm for academic success, combined with his constant dedication to personal growth and support for others, makes him an outstanding candidate for this award. A worthy winner!
Summer Saunders-Jeffrey Year 8
This year, Summer has immersed herself into English studies in a way that’s rarely seen from a twelve / thirteen year old. On an entirely consistent basis, Summer has gone above and beyond in class, showing an insatiable appetite for literary study. She has developed a passion for English that sees her commit to tasks in every way she can without fail. She has
developed and extended her thinking, taking on extra challenges. In addition, she has
maintained a curiosity for ideas, characters, plot and theme on any text given to her. She really takes pride in her work, completing exercise book after exercise book to consistently high standards.
Summer contributes to class in such positive ways, too. Whether it’s classroom management, recapping learning, sharing ideas, reading aloud (a specific challenge for Summer), handing out resources, and leading class discussions – Summer’s a model student and a leader among her peers. Summer is incredibly conscientious of others, too – supporting students who have been absent, or those who are yet to develop the confidence and resilience she has. “I’ve seen Summer inspired this year, and have been inspired by her. For that to be mutual is, I feel, a real gift. I’ve been privileged to teach Summer this year.”
At no point in has Summer allowed the challenges her Autistic Spectrum Condition presents hamper her motivation or her relationships with others. She has embraced changes to her teaching staff brilliantly, a huge achievement. Similarly, the disruption to the working week with school closure has not hampered her efforts in any way. Those breaks to routine have not derailed Summer, which shows real courage, flexibility and resilience. This is all while facing some personal challenges, with a family member going through surgery this year. Summer has remained bright and brilliant throughout. A pleasure to teach, a credit to her family, and a credit to herself. Well done! A credit to Plume Academy as well!
Edie Queen - Jones Year 13
Edie has been nominated for combining her artistic and creative talents and using them for the benefit of her peers and for the community. She worked with Maldon based, Longfields Medical Practice to design and create a promotional poster for their PPG (Patient Participation Group). Which was widely used in local publicity. To carry this out she attended regular planning meetings and completed the design brief in her own time. Edie has also been a great support to year 11 Art and Creative Media students, in producing primary photography for coursework. Edie has kindly agreed to model and act for several student’s photographic and film work, when their peers have been reluctant to do this for them. This means that students have been able to acquire their own primary resources, which is essential to achieving higher grades. Edie is an excellent role model in her conduct and is also a very high achieving student. The desire to help others and treat others in an unselfish way certainly demonstrates the Jack Petchey spirit! Excellent!
Mahalah Hill Year 7
Mahalah is a carer with all the extra responsibilities and challenges that this involves. She is very busy at home yet never fails to do her homework, to wear her uniform with pride, to say hello in the morning or before each lesson and to try her best in lesson and takes good care with her writing and looking after her book. She finds speaking difficult yet never gives up. At Breakfast Club, she is more open and has an excellent sense of humour. This well-deserved award recognises the high value, esteem, and regard in which we hold Mahalah. Very well done!
Abbey Evan Year 11
Nominated for this award by several of her peer group, Abbey is recognized because she always gives 100 Percent in everything that does. Despite the challenges she faced navigating this important year, she continues to bounce back with upmost resilience. She is someone who is a fantastic role model for both staff and students alike. “Her level of dedication to succeed is truly amazing and makes her a true inspiration to myself and others in the academy”. This was particularly demonstrated by her dedication to her language lessons over the last year. Well deserved and well done!
COP28 Lobbying world leaders to do something urgently about our climate
Plume Academy students Harriet Phillips, Caitlin O'Sullivan, Mo Shorney, Nicole Kacynska and Calum Hayden-Nicholls all appeared on BBC look East last night (18 July 2023) to express their concerns about climate change ahead of COP 28 in December. Harriet Phillips who of course attended COP 26 wanted to make sure that current UK delegate from Basildon Rachel Ojo who is one of four representing the views of young people, carried the right message when she attends the environmental summit later this year.
The interviews with our students took place at the newly opened Chelmer Blackwater Reserve witnessed by Harriet Phillips, Mr Wakefield and Mr Barton on a very hot afternoon on Saturday, 24 June along with invited guests from across the Maldon District.

Mr Stephenson and The Groovy Arts Club Band
Charity and Farewell Concert Raise an Amazing £411
Mr Stephenson and his Groovy Arts Club Band played their latest but hopefully not their final gig in the last week of the Summer Term here at Plume Academy. Mr Stephenson said after the concert "thank you everyone for this great effort and thank you for attending the concert". From gate receipts the homeless charity Shelter will be donated £211 and £200 will go to the benefit Plume Academy students. Known for their entertaining and energetic sets, celebrating 1960s/70s Art & Music with their original songs (new additions being ‘Starla Beads’, ‘Electric Blue’ & ‘Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out’) plus one or two appropriately-chosen covers. The band have a number of gigs lined up this summer. The audience demanded many encores on the night which the band duly complied with. We hope that this will not be the final concert played here by this much loved and iconic band.
Year 7 students enjoy an exciting STEM day at IWM Duxford
From the early days of flight, through to the dramatic days of the Second World War and the technological advances of the Cold War, IWM Duxford has played a central role in some of the most significant periods of 20th century history. Our Year 7 students discovered iconic aircraft, saw historic objects from the collections and uncovered numerous personal stories of the many lives impacted by conflict. Students saw Spitfires take to the skies from the airfield where they first flew, got up close to gigantic aircraft and walked in the footsteps of the men and women who served at Duxford.
Braxted Park - Let's Talk Trash Festival 2023 - Year 7 Trip Tuesday 18 July 2023
Essex, July 18th, 2023 - Plume Academy, in collaboration with Maldon District Council, Essex County Council, and Braxted Park Estate, was thrilled to host the launch of the 'Let’s Talk Trash' Festival 2023 exclusively for Plume Academy Year 7 students. This fully funded innovative and engaging event aimed to empower young people by providing exciting and participatory experiences that raised awareness of the impact of littering and waste on our environment.
The inaugural 'Let’s Talk Trash' Festival 2023 saw 300 students in Year 7 students along with representatives from Year 12, provided with an unforgettable experience that is hoped will shape their understanding and actions towards waste reduction and environmental preservation.
The festival featured six fun, educational, and interactive zones designed to challenge attitudes and create meaningful change. Our Year 7 students had the opportunity to explore the following zones at Braxted Park:
1. Self-Respect: Focusing on personal responsibility and the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
2. The 'art' of Recycling: Unleashing creativity through the transformative power of recycling.
3. Love the Essex Countryside: Discovering the beauty and significance of the Essex countryside and how to protect it.
4. Essex Wildlife: Exploring the value of local wildlife and understanding its connection to the ecosystem.
5. What's it Worth: Unveiling the impact of individual actions on the public purse and the collective difference they can make.
6. Making a Difference: Encouraging young people to take action, effect change and make a positive impact on their community.
Year 9 summer environment project
Over the last two weeks our year 9 students have taken on the role of environmental health officers, botanists and engineers. They have been looking at ways that science can be used to help our environment and develop ideas that will support future generations.
We have looked at ways that we can reuse materials to help ease the burden on scarce resources, escalating energy costs and overflowing landfill. The students have investigated the damage that contaminants can do to our unique and beautiful coast line. They have also considered different ways that we could create electricity to help society move away from the use of fossil fuels and its many environmental issues caused.
Here is a summary of the fantastic ideas the students have worked so enthusiastically on:

Making seedling pots from reused materials and grown sunflowers (a prize will be awarded to the tallest sunflower grown over the summer!) In the process learning about the importance of considering the materials they use and the disposal of these materials, to see how this affects the very environment around us.

Wind turbines have been built and different blade shapes investigated to discover the best shapes to use. In the process learning the importance of replacing where we get our energy from, so important in the current climate.

Chemical analysis tests have been carried out on leachates to identify the contaminants present. Helping students with their understanding of the importance of preserving the quality of our waterways.
I want to personally thank year 9 for their incredible enthusiasm during this project. It was so heart-warming to witness how caring and passionate our students at the Plume are on such important environmental issues.

Year 12 A Level Graphic Design students receive £20 voucher each from Maldon Festival organisers
Maldon Festival organisers were so impressed with the graphic design work completed for the event this year that
A Level Graphic Design students Oliver Martinez, Billy Charlton, Dylan Brown, Kaitlynn Rodel and Emmy Hasler received £20.00 vouchers to spend in the Queen Victoria Public House and restaurant with their families. Mrs West who is Head of the Art and Design faculty and pictured above with the students was "really pleased" that the group had an opportunity to work closely with the event organisers on a real and live project. We are very grateful to festival organisers Bobbi Davy, Colin Baldy and of course the generosity of The Queen Victoria public house for donating the vouchers.
Year 7 Ecology Day
On Monday 10th July, our year 7 scientists swapped the laboratory environment for the classroom of the great outdoors! Almost 300 students, around thirty staff and nine year 12 volunteers all descended upon our Mill Road field and the picturesque Promenade Park.
The students were immersed in a world of ecology, closely observing the flora and fauna of the woodland, grass and saltmarsh habitats. Students were using real ecological sampling techniques including pond dipping, sweep netting, soil testing, and transect sampling. They were then tasked with identifying the invertebrates that they had collected. New for this year they also experienced a bird survey and ecology bingo! The students conducted themselves well and demonstrated genuine enthusiasm as they fully engaged in the activities.
At the end of a tiring but highly productive day, students were treated to a fascinating presentation by our Head Girl, Harriet Phillips. She spoke with great passion and inspiration as she told the story of her own journey of environmental campaigning though the WWF, and her experience of engaging with big names in environmental protection including Feargal Sharkey and the one and only Sir David Attenborough.
The Science Faculty would like to put on record our sincere thanks to Harriet Phillips and all the year 12 students who gave up their time to assist us, as well as all staff who supported our ecology day. A wonderful team effort!
Maldon Festival Year 8 Art Exhibition St Mary’s Church Maldon
"The Green Man”
Plume Academy Art and Design students in Year 8 completed a fascinating and intricate curriculum project using the Green Man as inspiration for their work. Central to the King’s invitation to Coronation guests is the Green Man at the bottom of the design. He is an ancient figure from folklore, symbolic of spring and rebirth, to celebrate the new reign.

Festival organisers: used recycled corrugated card to complete individual responses from our students to the ancient myth of the Green Man. The theme echoed that of this years festival entitled "Coronation".
The Flutes & Frets Duo play at our Mill Road Campus to Year 7
The Flutes & Frets Duo arrived at our Mill Road Campus as part of the Maldon Festival Summer 2023 concerts to demonstrate the versatility of the flute and plucked instruments combination to an audience made up of our Year 7 students. During the concert they played all types of music on the instruments that were in use at the time of composition. A wide range of music was explored, ranging from the Middle Ages all the way through to the present day. Plume Academy would like to thank Colin Baldy, Director of the Maldon Festival and The Flutes and Frets Duo for taking time out of their busy festival schedule to play exclusively for us at Mill Road.
Hugely successful first night for our production of Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical
Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical is a wonderful adaptation with plenty of positive messages as well as the usual Dahl dark humour. It's based on a stage musical, which in turn was based on the same classic children's book. Plume Academy students performed brilliantly without first night nerves a stunning version of this much-loved production. A huge thank you must again go to the Expressive Arts faculty for their tireless hard work and dedication. Our students and the audience loved every minute of what they saw and were hugely appreciative as well as very knowledgeable about what goes into preparing such a complex show.
Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition to The Peak District in July 2023
Sometimes all you need are pictures to tell a story. The brilliantly organised trip to The Peak District as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Silver award was once again hugely successful. As always, a big vote of thanks must go to the fantastic Mr and Mrs Adams, Mr Power and Mr Robinson for the wonderful experience afforded to our students. Without their incredible enthusiasm, time and dedication trips like this simply could not happen. What a wonderful experience and adventure for all to remember.
Special guest former West Ham United favourite Anton Ferdinand joins our Sports Award Evening 2023
The Sports Award Evening held this year to celebrate the achievements of our very talented and gifted students in all year groups, saw a very special guest in attendance to witness and contribute his thoughts to support the evening.
We were absolutely delighted to host former West Ham United football legend Anton Ferdinand.
He generously gave his time and answered questions about his early career, his family and the highs and lows of playing professional football in the Premier League.
Our PE staff along with Mr Wakefield introduced and co-hosted this very memorable evening for everyone in attendance. All of our students along with their parents had a thoroughly enjoyable and unforgettable time.
Our talented musicians to play in Maldon library
On Saturday 1st July 2023 we were delighted to take some of our talented musicians to play in Maldon library. Manns Music Colchester have donated a piano in order for people to have an opportunity to practise and develop their musical talents without having to own their own instrument. Fiona Hill (District lead for Essex Music service) and I (Mrs Adams) took a group of students to play, sing and demonstrate the piano to the community.
Mrs Adams said, "the music was well received by the public and we had a group of youngsters who had an impromptu lesson from one of our students".

Further concerts in the library are planned for 7 October and 9 December 2023.
Plume Academy wins award for young carer support
Plume Academy has been given a Silver award for our work to make sure students don’t miss out on an education because they are young carers.
The Young Carers in Schools programme helps primary and secondary schools improve outcomes for young carers and celebrates good practice through the Young Carers in Schools Award.
Young carers are responsible for emotional, practical or physical care for a parent, sibling or other family member who have a physical disability, mental health issue or substance misuse issue.
The Carers Trust and The Childrens Society in a joint statement said, “to achieve a Silver Award Plume Academy has demonstrated that it supports young carers in many ways, including awareness raising with pupils and staff, and by building links within the local community. Young carers are consulted with, and vital information is made available to pupils and families, letting them know where to go for help.”
The Ironworks’ Meadow Bioblitz-
A chance for families to join us in discovering the wildlife on our reserve
This Sunday, 9th July, we will be hosting our first Bioblitz.
The idea is to spend a day looking at and recording all the different animals and plants to be found on our reserve.
The main event will run from 10am to 2pm. We have invited experts from the Essex Field Club to help identify what is found and Maldon Council are kindly providing nets, collecting jars and magnifying glasses so that families can look for creatures themselves. The Essex Moth Group will be running light traps over the previous night so hopefully there will be interesting moths and other insects for people to see.
We will create lists for everything found on the day and provide challenge sheets for children for particular species for them to look out for, such as butterflies and grasshoppers.
Giselle Henderson once again accepted onto the Cheerleading Generation Next Programme

Year 10 student Giselle Henderson has been accepted onto the Cheerleading Generation Next programme for the second year running. The Gen Next programme is open to all cheer athletes in the UK and a selection is made from video auditions. This is a highly sought after placement as only the top 50 best athletes get offered a place. These athletes are the best in their age group across the UK and are rewarded with a week's training camp with top coaches from the United States.
Giselle is very much looking forward to this camp and is excited to train with the most talented elite athletes from around the country and the American coaches on this programme. Giselle's mother Mrs Susan Henderson said, "We would like to thank everyone for their support in helping Giselle achieve this success"
Benjamin Frost Artistic Roller skating 2023 Youth British Champion

Year 11 student Benjamin Frost competed this weekend at the British Championships for Artistic Roller skating and is now the 2023 Youth British Champion. Ben has had massive issues with injury this year. However, despite not being on top form as well as having to perform all his spins and jumps on only his right leg (as his left leg is too painful) still managed to smash his PB. His mother Mrs Charlotte Frost said, "we are super proud of the effort and resilience shown by Ben, despite his injury concerns he achieved a gold medal and the title of British Champion.
Year 9 music students meet Lucky Moyo and take part in a West African Djembe Drumming workshop
Due to the generous support and sponsorship of Colin Baldy pictured far left who is the Artistic Director of the long-standing Maldon Festival. Twenty-five students in Year 9 opting to study GCSE Music in the coming academic year (2023/24), were treated to an exclusive educational workshop focussed on West African Djembe Drumming provided by Lucky Moyo pictured centre.
For Lucky, the process of sharing is the real driving force and at the core of all his work. With this in mind, Lucky works in a variety of settings which includes schools, universities, community centres, theatres, reformatories, prisons and, increasingly arts-based training with staff of various organisations on issues to do with teamwork, cross cultural awareness and cross generation awareness.
Lucky is a firm believer in the role of music beyond just entertainment. He passionately, argues for music as a vehicle/medium for change, communication, dialogue, healing and problem solving.
This event is for Mill Road Campus students and their families on 4th July.
We are raising money to support a school in Vinjeru, Africa.

You can make anything you want in response - a painting, a piece of music, a drama piece, a short film - anything!
Some of the artworks you make will be shared along Maldon High Street in our curated arts trail, which will showcase The School of Hope's artwork alongside an audio tour.
Plume College Leadership Team ready for the up-and-coming academic year 2023/24
The newly elected Plume College Leadership Team have already hit the ground running supporting a number of events across the academy and wider Maldon Town community. The core leadership students elected to the team are from right to left Felix Chaliss- Martin, Harriet Phillips, Mo Shorney and Jessica Watkin.
Mr Barton, Whole Academy Lead for Marketing, Media Communications and Community Engagement said, "I am very pleased and impressed with the time the team gave to collect money for charity at the recently run Maldon Mud Race 2023."

11-year-old Amateur boxer Elin-Rose Chapman wins Silver
11-year-old amateur boxer and Year 7 student Elin-Rose Chapman wins Silver in her latest outing at the England Boxing National Schools Competition 2023, fighting in the Under 40Kg Final.
Keen boxing fan and supporter of the sport Mr Wakefield said, "I’ve had the pleasure of watching the footage of the fight three times now and what a setting for such a youngster to box on! Still, with my pugilistic eyes on, I actually had Elin winning the fight quite comfortably!" He went on to say, "I’m sure she will hugely benefit from the entire experience and look forward to many more similar events to come".

The far-reaching benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme
This sunny weekend we took around 90 Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh students to Rendlesham Forest for the Silver practise and Bronze assessed expedition, the weather was glorious and the students a real credit to the academy.
One of the assessors for the Bronze cohort asked a group what they had enjoyed most about the weekend, and they said "freedom", when asked to explain more they said, "freedom from the phone and all the pressure social media causes". They felt they could be themselves in the outdoors and enjoy just being. D of E organiser Mrs Adams said "I thought this was a really interesting comment and worth sharing. The benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme are far reaching".
Mrs Adams went on to say, "thank you to all staff and community volunteers for their help and support. Roll on July when we take our Silver cohort to Derbyshire for their assessed expedition".

Year 11 Prom Committee raise an amazing £298.34p
The Year 11 Student Prom Committee with their Head of Year Mr Farrow ran three very different fun events last week to raise money for their Prom. These included a staff v student football match; a cake sale and a great opportunity throw wet sponges at various members of staff locked into stocks. A very proud Mr Farrow wanted to thank everyone for their support in helping to raise "an amazing £298.38p". The money will be used for a fun surprise activity on the night of the Prom itself.
College Student Leadership Team Collect Money for Charity at the Maldon Mud Race
The newly elected College Student Leadership Team that includes Jessica Watkin, Mo Shorney (Head Boy), Hattie Phillips (Head Girl), Felix Challis - Martin and Carla Mason generously collected money for charity at the world-famous Maldon Mud Race held last Sunday (May 14,2023 ). An estimated 15,000 spectators saw 324 competitors take part in the race on what turned out eventually to be a wonderfully sunny day.
Mr Wakefield Executive Principal who sadly was not able to attend the event said, "I am very proud of the College Student Leadership Team for giving up their time to support this event" He went on to say, "they are fantastic ambassadors and representatives for Plume Academy on such an important day in the Maldon community calendar." Mr Barton was delighted to relay message which was received with a great deal of pride and joy by the team. Interestingly former Plume Academy teaching assistant James Haskey Jones actually won the race for a record fourth time. An achievement made all the more remarkable by the fact that the last time he competed was over ten years ago.
GB Speedway competitor Cooper Rushen is taking on the World
Motorcycle Grass track is a form of track racing which typically, in its current form, takes place on a flat track consisting of two straights and two bends usually constructed in a field. It is one of the oldest types of motorcycle sports in the UK. Our very own Cooper Rushen has a natural talent for this type of sport and competes successfully in the British Championships. Now he is going to represent Great Britain at Speedway in the World Championships in Mallia, Sweden this summer which is fantastic achievement for someone so young. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes.
A celebration of life, a memory tree to capture and celebrate a loved one
We are delighted to share with you following on from our first memory tree planting ceremony held at our Mill Road Campus for year 7 and 8 students. Fambridge Road students in our memorial garden located opposite our main reception, also have the opportunity to attach a memory note to honour a loved one who may have sadly passed away. A memory tree is a place to capture special memories of your loved one. Students and staff can take a card and write their memory on the card and then tie the card onto the tree branch.

When a loved one passes, one of the biggest concerns family members have is how to keep their memory alive. There are many ideas and different ways to remember and honour a loved one - one relatively new choice that is gaining in popularity is with a memory tree. Plume Academy has decided this is a good choice to follow and have now planted trees on both campuses to support those who have suffered a bereavement. and want to write as a gift a message to those no longer with us.
The project led by Ms Farmer and supported by Mr Collen together with our students on both campuses as part of our bereavement group. Two books are available on each site in the LAIC for students to read which can help them through the grieving process. Ms Farmer went on to say," I have four information books for staff covering a variety of different ways to help students feel supported and be able to grieve."

U15 Essex League and County Cup Double Champions
Building on the success of the U13 team, Maldon Rugby Club U15 squad have, for the first time in their club history, achieved the double by winning both the Essex Division 1 League competition and the Essex Cup. They have also maintained a fantastic and brilliant 16-game winning run.

Brothers are very much sorted and sort after at London Broncos
Plume Academy students Charlie Randall Year 11 and Will Randall Year 10 have been playing brilliantly for the London Broncos Rugby League Team. They have recently travelled up to play against Bradford and Leeds (at Headingley Stadium!) The boys have continued to practice twice a week travelling to Richmond every Wednesday and Friday. This week they had their first home fixture at Richmond against St Helens. They have 5 more fixtures to play. The boys have started every game and Charlie has captained the team twice. They are playing against Warrington in 2 weeks' time. Proud PE teacher Ms Parry said, " we are extremely proud of what Charlie and Will have achieved so early in their sporting career playing Rugby League" and went on to say, "please wish them well if you see them."
Torrential rain did not dampen under 13 cup win
Maldon Rugby Club U13’s featuring a strong line up of players from Plume Academy won their cup final against formidable opponents. This was the first year competing at cup level, so it was a massive achievement for the team. Torrential rain and an extremely tough opposition didn’t dampen their chances of a well deserved the win. Mrs Clark Joint Head of Academy said, "We are very proud of the way they approached the match despite the terrible weather conditions. They thoroughly deserve the win and all of the congratulations that will follow."
Reflecting on our A Level Physics trip to CERN Geneva 2023
Between the 13th and 15th March, the A level Physics department took 20 very excited year 12 and year 13 Physics students to CERN Geneva to visit the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This is the famous facility which discovered the theorised Higgs boson in 2012.
We left Plume, at 2am on Monday the 13th March, bleary eyed but all the students were full of anticipation of what the next 3 days would hold. We had a smooth flight from Heathrow to Geneva and on arrival visited the Geneva Waterfront and the History of Science museum. On the Tuesday we visited the CERN facility including the exhibition and the facility itself. The students had the opportunity to learn about how the particles are accelerated and see for themselves the machinery used in the initial stages before they enter the LHC itself. They even played chess in the CERN canteen while facility scientists passed by as they waited for the tour to start. In the evening the students had the new experience of listening to tradition music while sampling fondue. Finally on the Wednesday we explored historical parts of Geneva’s Old Quarter. The students were keen to explore the area and were curious about what they would find. It allowed us to visit the Natural History museum before finally taking a boat trip across Lake Geneva in the sunshine on the way to viewing the UN building. We finally returned flew back to Heathrow and to the Academy in the early hours of Thursday morning after what was tiring but successful trip.
The students really enjoyed themselves throughout the trip (despite the long travel times at times of the day/night they are not used to seeing!) They engaged with the different locations, the exhibits they were visiting and the staff at the CERN facility itself. They were impeccable throughout the trip and were a prime example of Plume Academy students.

We have a 'World Champion' at the academy!
The fantastically talented Giselle Henderson won gold in the World Cheerleading Championships 2023 held this year in Orlando, USA.
In the category of Youth Coed Median, Team England won Gold. Silver was awarded to Canada who were six points behind Team England, which is quite a gap! Bronze was awarded to Chile.
Mrs Clark Joint head of Academy said, "I am delighted to inform everyone in the academy that we have a 'World Champion' "
Not only that but Giselle along with her Team England teammates featured in a BBC Newsround article yesterday which will give you further background and insight into what Giselle has achieved.
Academy Celebrates Plume Student Achievements
On the very last day of the Spring term Plume Academy welcomed students past and present in Years 11,12 and 13 to our annual Awards Evening. This was the first in person event of this kind in four years. Having previously presented awards via a virtual presentation, it was great to assemble in one room again for this very prestigious event.
Led by our Chair of Trustees Mr P Nagle the awards were read out by Mr Jackson as the former Head of Year 11 and by Mr Hallam as the Head of College. In between we had introductions and closing remarks made by our Joint Heads of Academy Mrs Clark and Mr Baster.
Special thanks must as always go to our Head Boy and Girl, Jenson Bacon and Grace Salfairso who not only received awards but gave a vote of thanks to all in attendance. Indeed, Jenson also sung solo to our assembled guests in the audience.
Well done to all that won an award for all of their hard work contributions and successes throughout the preceding academic years. All thoroughly well-earned and deserved.
Plume Arts Showcase is huge success Spring term success
Students from all year groups across the academy took part in Spring Arts Performance Showcase in the last week of the Spring Term. Mrs Adams Expressive Arts faculty lead said, "The evening was absolutely brilliant, and the standard of work was extremely high". Performances were delivered from three subjects that included, Music, Dance and Drama. Mrs Adams went on to say, "The performances illustrate that the Expressive Arts Faculty is going from strength to strength as we recover from the effects of the past few years."
The students taking part on the night were extremely grateful to all members of the Expressive Arts faculty that gave up their time so willingly to make this event a huge success.
Charlotte Hasler proudly competed at the Gymnastic British Championships 2023 held in Liverpool
Year 12 College student Charlotte Hasler "did amazingly well" recently at the Gymnastic British Championships held over four days between 23rd - 26th March at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool. With a crowd of 4000 in attendance and many excellent senior girls, some of which were Team GB gymnasts. Mrs Hasler said, "Charlotte can be so proud of herself and what she achieved. She learnt a lot from competing with such high level and experienced competitors. Given that Charlotte had very little notice to prepare. "Mrs Hassler went on to say, "Charlotte has new goals for training over the next few months and is looking forward to hopefully qualifying and competing again in 2024."

Plume students bake Pi to raise money for a school in Africa
Pi day which falls on Tuesday, March 14, is an annual event and a mathematician's favourite day devoted to celebrating the one and only true magic number: π. Pi is 3.14, a mathematical constant, never-ending, the circumference-to-diameter ratio of a circle.
To celebrate this annual event Year 7 and 8 students, brought their creations the day before to the Maths office to be judged the next day. Prizes were awarded and then at lunch on Tuesday they were sold to raise money for Maths equipment for nominated school in Vinjeru, Africa.
Ms Hopkins said, "We’re really proud of how well the student leadership team engaged in running this event and special mention to Phoebe Plummer who took first prize for her beautiful cake. Thank you for all the staff donations and cakes too".

Plume Academy's 1724 students get to vote in the Young Essex Assembly elections
The Young Essex Assembly (YEA) is the elected Youth Council for Essex.
Every 2 years 75 young people representing all districts across Essex are elected on to the YEA where they review priorities, consult, campaign, and engage with other young people as well as adults, organisations, and decision makers to ensure young people are a key part of discussions and decisions made at all levels. This year is the Young Essex Assembly elections where young people take part in a democratic vote and decide which candidate they want to represent them. The candidates are young people who have applied to the Young Essex Assembly to be elected for their area.
Plume College A Level Physicists visit CERN to see Large Hadron Collider
Our Plume College A Level Physics students are pictured above in Geneva, Switzerland in readiness for their visit to CERN and the Large Hadron Collider.
Joint Head of Academy, Mr Baster said, " we wish the students and the staff accompanying them the very best of visits. Sincere thanks to Mr Robinson for his organisation and leadership of the trip, which took the best part of 4 years to plan due to the emergence of the worldwide pandemic that placed this once in a lifetime trip on hold for too long."
Tom Aldis wins Bronze at the 40th Taekwondo Association English Championships
Held in March at the Skydome in Coventry with 1300 competitors, Tom achieved a bronze medal in Patterns from an exceptionally strong group of boys up to 18 years of age, all of whom were black belt grade. Proud parent Mrs Aldis said, "his dad and I are immensely proud of Tom, and this puts him in an excellent frame of mind for the upcoming World Championships, which will be held in July this year."
As a family bonus his dad won gold in sparring too! Mrs Aldis went on to say, "both are immensely proud of each other."
Joint Head of Academy, Mr Baster commented, "sounds like congratulations are in order for the whole family."
Plume Academy continue to be very proud of the ongoing achievements of Tom as well as his father, and wish the entire family good luck for the up-and-coming World Taekwondo Championships.
Maldon Pioneers invited to improve their digital skills
Year 12 Princes Trust students along with teachers Ms Tween and Ms Baker hosted a digital skills event for the Maldon Pioneers visiting the academy. Students as part of their study programme worked one to one with nine Pioneers to support a range of digital skills questions posed by our visitors.
The Maldon Pioneers Association was set up in 1982 to provide activities for local adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities whose needs were not severe enough to be eligible for local authority resources but were not able to participate in their community activities independently.
Mr Baster Joint Head of Academy who visited the classroom during the session was very impressed with how our students worked so seamlessly with our guests. He went on to invite the Pioneers back later in the Summer term for a high tea to feedback on what they have learned and used.
Ms Tween said, "this is a fantastic experience for our students and hugely valuable for them and their course"
Carly Flain and Louisa Thorpe representing Maldon Pioneers and who worked closely with Ms Tween and Ms Baker on the plan for the "Digital Skills Workshop", were both immensely impressed with how successful the sessions turned out.
Plume Academy thrilled to join Essex Chambers of Commerce
Plume Academy is delighted to announce that we are proud members of the Essex Chambers of Commerce. Invited to join after hosting a highly successful "Big Business Network" event recently and following on the tail of an equally high-profile careers evening. Chris Barton Whole Academy Lead for Marketing, Media Communications and Community Engagement was
delighted to be approached by Nick Brown representing Essex Chambers of Commerce with a proposal to join their organisation fully funded by Maldon District Council.
Mr Collen who helped to organise the network event with Mrs Ingram and Mr Barton said, "this is a fantastic and unbelievable opportunity for our students to gain direct access to some of the most successful businesses operating across Essex and beyond." he went on to say "businesses are looking to work with young people more directly and at an earlier stage in their lives to prepare them better for employment in the future"

Number 1 LTA Ranking for Ben Welsford
Huge congratulations to Ben Welsford, Y11 who has recently achieved the LTA Boys U16 Padel Tennis Number 1 Ranking. He is also ranked Number 3 in the U18 age group. He is so focussed, and his success is testament to his dedication and hard work. PE teacher Ms Parry said, "We are all incredibly proud of you Ben!"
The family holiday that sparked an Olympic dream
Some may remember Plume Academy student Charlie Dixon. Charlie completed his first year of competition on the foiling windsurfer this year and managed to win in all comptions he competed in!

Proud teacher Mr Harris and sailing enthusiast said, "as a person who windsurfs I can't express how difficult a challenge this has been for Charlie. Just staying on the thing 70cm in the air going 20-30 knots (23-35mph) in a straight line is hard enough for me let alone competing against up to 100 others all going the same speed and turning corners!"
Mr Harris also went on to say, "It has been a long time since I have seen such a natural talent. Hopefully Olympic silverware is on the cards for him in Paris 2024"

Rotary Youth Debate
On Tuesday evening March 2, six students from Plume Academy participated in the Rotary Youth Debate regional final at Chelmsford County Hall. This included: Freddie Diddams, Joe Gray and Tyson Jewitt for the intermediate group and Archie Jones, Jasmine Stamate and Matthew Tachauer for the senior group.
Our students represented themselves, our school and Maldon Rotary Club excellently.
Although we did not go through to the national final, Joe Gray (8CAA) won the best proposer in the intermediate group and Archie Jones (9JSG) won the best opposer in the senior group.

Plume Academy makes games console for those living with dementia
Year 11 student Kamran Waller and Design Technology teacher Mr James Aylen Smith together with an organisation called Remap made a games console designed for those with living with dementia or with a physical disadvantage.
Remap is a charity which produces aids and equipment for people with disabilities where there are no suitable alternatives. The service is free of charge and bespoke items are produced entirely by volunteers.
With the excellent help of Peter Livingstone and Bob Richardson, Plume Academy teamed up with Remap to produce a games console with large buttons and programmed with computer games to improve memory retention or a physical impairment.
The funding is provided by Remap and the games console produced will be handed over to Sarah Troop of Maldon District Dementia Action Alliance in due course.
Executive Principal Mr C Wakefield said, "he was very proud of Kamran for taking on this complex challenge and to Mr Aylen Smith for his time and generous support for this fantastic project."
Rotary Club of Maldon Presented £500 to GB Artistic Roller Skater Ben Frost
Local Rotary Club President Mrs Judy Smith proudly presented, Ben Frost and his mother Mrs Charlotte Frost with £500 to support Ben with his artistic roller skating and his determination to continue to represent and compete for the Great Britain team at the highest level.
Ben and his mother were thrilled to receive not only the cheque but enjoyed a two-course meal courtesy of hosts Rotary Club of Maldon.
Mrs Charlotte Frost commented that "his artistic skate outfit can cost up to £500 a time and that the money is valued and gratefully received, in what at times can be a very expensive sport to compete in without the help of generous organisations such as the Rotary Club."
Mrs Smith went on to congratulate Ben for his achievements so far, and on behalf of herself and the members for the Rotary Club of Maldon and wished him "a great deal of luck for the future."
Mrs Zoe Moss Plume Academy Subject Lead for Business and keen fundraiser, recently organised a cake sale, raising £170.00 for Sarcoma UK.
What is Sarcoma?
Sarcomas are uncommon cancers that can affect any part of your body.
A key symptom of sarcoma is a lump that gets bigger quickly.
Most people get diagnosed when their sarcoma is about the size of a large tin of baked beans. Sarcoma is a rare form of cancer and Plume Academy staff were very pleased to support Sarcoma UK with a donation of £170 raised through a cake sale organised by Mrs Moss.
Mrs Moss said, "thank you to all those who have donated so generously and to Ms Ellie Booth for being my sous-chef."
Could you be the next Maldon Carnival Queen Princess Rosebud or Prince
The search has started to find the new Maldon Carnival Court 2023. We are looking for a Queen, Senior Princesses, Junior Princesses or Prince, and a Rosebud Queen to represent our town around the County.
Being part of Maldon Carnival Court is a great honour, you will be representing your town and raising money for local charities. Your official duties will begin 30th July 2023 when you will be officially crowned for the year ahead.
Carnival week which starts on the 1st of August is an exciting time for the court as well as one of the busiest parts of your year, during the week we have several fun activities for children and families where you will be able to help and sometimes even take part.
Saturday the 6th of August 2023 is our carnival day. You will be welcomed by the crowds of people lining the streets of Maldon waving to them whilst being chaperoned throughout the town on our float. After the procession, there will be an afternoon Queen and Court tea where you will be able to associate with other Carnival Courts who you will be spending lots of time with throughout the year.
The carnival court will visit different carnivals around Essex throughout the year. You will also attend several dances presentation evenings town functions and carnival activities and charitable events. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends and have fun.
Most events outside of carnival week are on a Saturday or Sunday still interested? If you want to be part of something special and be part of our town’s history, build up your confidence, visit other towns and have lots of fun along the way then do not delay apply today.
Applications are open to boys and girls from the age of 8 to 17 Rosebud 5 to 7 you must be able to attend a selection evening with parent or guardian at Maldon Town Hall on Saturday.13th May 2023 7pm

Jack Petchey Foundation Celebration Awards Evening January 2023
We never tire of the enthusiasm, high spirits, and inspiration that this evening unfailingly presents! Returning ( in person!) after nearly three years we were once again delighted to take part in this evening of celebration of our award winners from last year. This was alongside many other schools and voluntary organisations from Chelmsford and Maldon. At the end of January, Abigail Wilkins, Ben Parker, Isabella Olenka, Henry Crates, Imogen Morris, Honey Lock, Lewis Bridgeman along with Plume Academy staff and lots of very proud parents were all in attendance at the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards Evening at the Civic Theatre Chelmsford. Our students are pictured above alongside the Mayor Of Chelmsford.
As has been well documented in Plume News, our Jack Petchey Achievement Award scheme has been running for several years now and continues to do so. The Award recognises those young people who make “ a wholehearted, unselfish and dedicated commitment to their school, club or community” and indeed each of our pictured winners for this year ( including Ellie Janes and Amy Cross who unfortunately was unable to attend) certainly fulfilled this criteria. In each case the funds have been generously donated and used in various initiatives in the Academy; from Dance workshops to sports equipment to specialist Science, Drama and English resources! Scarlett Davis Y7 has been selected to train with Emerging Talent Centre at Colchester United on a permanent basis. Scarlett is pictured on the far left of the standing back row.
Scarlett has been selected to train within the Emerging Talent Centre for the following reasons: portraying a strength in/out of possession and showing a great attitude within training.

Give A Child a Christmas campaign

The Victoria Inn for their generosity
Mrs Lorna Hart the proprietor of The Victoria Inn, which is situated on Belvedere Road, Burnham on Crouch, Essex, kindly organises the 'Give A Child a Christmas campaign'. She uses her contacts with local businesses to collect presents for disadvantaged children and struggling families. The Business's donate a huge array of all different items, from games, chocolate, make up sets, science games, slippers, hats, gloves etc. This is an amazing achievement for a local pub, to help their community and is very much appreciated by us at the Academy. Lorna has contacted Jo Frost our Pupil Premium coordinator two years running now to help us support our families who may need this extra support. The families are so grateful, as many are struggling with the cost of their fuel prices. The Academy would like to thank Lorna and her customers who kindly donate these gifts and wish them a very happy Christmas and a healthy new year.
Plume Academy and Maldon District Council host Christmas Party for Children and Families from Ukraine
Executive Principal Carl Wakefield and the Chairman of Maldon District Council Bob Boyce MBE issued an invitation to parents and children from Ukraine; along with their UK host families living in Maldon, to come to Plume Academy and meet Father Christmas.
They were met with a very warm welcome not only from Mr Wakefield and Mr Boyce but from Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst (His Lord Lieutenant of Essex) who represents His Majesty The King at public engagements he is unable to attend.
With over 80 guests in attendance all of the children and adults were treated to seasonal refreshments, cakes, sandwiches, various nibbles as well individual presents for all of the children; presented to them by Father Christmas (spoiler alert Rotary Club member Mr Alan Smith) with Mrs Tolhurst and Mr Boyce alongside.
It was the first time that all of the families had seen each other since their arrival from war torn Ukraine. The entire evening saw the room filled with children's laughter and lots of warm conversations to a backdrop of Christmas music favourites and entertainment provided by the Head Boy, Jenson Button, Head Girl Grace Salfairso, and the excellent College leadership team.
Shane Saggs and Mrs Bush Campaign for the Homeless in Essex
Year 10 student Shane Saggs is very determined that our CHESS Christmas appeal for the homeless on our streets in Essex, is a huge success. Pictured here with his Head of Year Mrs Bush and with the support of Dad, Rob Saggs Chief Executive Officer of CHESS Homeless. Shane launched our Christmas appeal with a brilliant assembly to his fellow students in Year 10. He spoke clearly and with feeling about what it means to be homeless in Essex and why help is very much needed.
Shane hopes the stakeholders of the Plume Academy family and community will, if they are in a position to consider doing so, support our chosen charity this Christmas, especially with the following items:
Hats, gloves, scarves, chocolate, cereal bars, pop-up tents, sleeping bags and toiletries such as shower gel, deodorant, shampoo.
Donations can be made at our Fambridge Road and Mill Road Campuses.

The Power To Change Is Right Under Your Nose
Our fantastic Plume Academy staff have shown some serious dedication to raising awareness of men’s health over the course of November. Well done and thank you to all that participated! We’ve raised £250 so far.
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide.
A HUGE congratulations to Ms Booth and Ms Moss, who together raised £200 in their Move-ember. They ran 60km throughout the month in recognition of the 60 men we lose each hour, every hour across the world. Well done ladies!
Elliot Rose on set with Hollywood legends in The Northman
As you may have seen in the cinemas and more recently, on Sky, one of the big recent movie releases is a film called ‘The Northman’. It has a whole host of Hollywood stars in it however, one of the film’s biggest stars is our very own Elliott Rose from Year 9!
Mr Wakefield commented, "If you speak to Elliott about the film , he is so humble and measured about it, it’s quite astonishing really. Nevertheless, it only provides yet further evidence of what an absolutely tremendous young man he is".
Elliott has also recently finished a short film on knife crime and secured the lead role in a short horror film which he's due to start filming during the Christmas break. Furthermore, he’s also just secured another role in a short comedy which he’s waiting to hear a start date for. Very excitingly, Elliott’s also just had a meeting with a well-known director regarding a lead role in a big upcoming feature film. He’s waiting to hear back about the final decision as he’s down to the last three actors. Therefore, fingers crossed for him!
Mr Wakefield also went on to say, "Elliot continues to do the academy, his family and above all, himself proud!"

Women European Open, Sub-Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships 2022
Year 13 Plume College student Ella Smallcombe representing GBR has successfully secured three bronze medals at the European Powerlifting Championships 2022 in Poland today. She said she is ‘over the moon’ with her performances as she has been struggling with a back injury which fortunately did not hinder her fantastic performance in these championships. Below are the three bronze medal lifts that she made.

Plume Academy pays tribute to those brave men and women past and present with its own acts of tribute on Friday 11 November 2022 and on Remembrance Sunday.
The laying of wreaths here at both of our campuses and again on Sunday at the cenotaph in Maldon Town. Our students represented proudly the academy in an exemplary fashion on this important day in our national calendar.
Plume Academy is a Dementia Friendly Community
Plume Academy was officially recognised recently by the Alzheimer Society for our work in working to become a dementia friendly community. Sarah Troop Director for Maldon and District Community Voluntary Service proudly presented the certificate to Ms Tween and Ms Baker together with Mark Neville who is the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friendly Communities Coordinator and Pan Essex Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) Co-chair for Essex Community Dementia Support Service.
Ms Tween and Ms Baker devised with the support of Maldon District Dementia Action Alliance a brilliant action plan and programme to raise awareness and support amongst students of this all too familiar condition. They have devised projects within the taught curriculum aimed solely to promote action in our united fight against dementia.
Mr Wakefield Executive Principal and Mr Barton who leads on community engagement both commented on the exceptional work that had been undertaken by our students and the staff involved. In particular noting the work that was completed during the height of Covid and the corresponding lock down periods.
Abigail Wilkins Is Taking On The World
Plume Academy are delighted to share some fantastic news regarding Plume College student Abigail Wilkins aged 17. Abby recently travelled to Wolverhampton to try-out for the England Jazz Dance Team. Following a very successful trail, Abby has been selected for Team England to travel to Florida in April next year to compete at The Dance Worlds 2023. Abby will attend an intensive training camp in Wolverhampton once a month to train and prepare for the competition, while remaining determined to study successfully for her A levels.
Proud Dance teacher, Mrs Markham - Lee said, "this is an amazing achievement, that will be a fantastic opportunity and experience for Abby."
Abby is confident she can become a World Jazz Dance Champion in 2023 and went on to say, "I am delighted with this chance to compete at the highest level for my country."
GB Artistic Skate Coaching Team Praise Ben Frost
Plume Academy student Benjamin Frost aged just 15, recently competed in Italy for Great Britain in the Artistic Skate Cup of Europe. He achieved a personal best in his short programme. Unfortunately, he fell twice in his long programme and ended finishing 7th. Charlotte and Will Frost said, "We are incredibly proud parents and absolutely delighted for Ben, he has worked so hard to get to this point." The GB coaching team commented, "that the routines and performances were very good from Ben, you would never know it was his first time competing at this level."
Ben gained lots of confidence working with the GB team and he is now looking forward with great anticipation to competing this weekend at the British Autumn Nationals, before going on to France to take part in the Interland Cup.
Powerlifter Ella Smallcombe wants to be a World Junior Champion
Plume Academy College student Ella Smallcombe has been officially invited to join Team GB at the up-and-coming World Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships to be held in Istanbul, Turkey. Ella and her coach Adam Fosbrook are excited by what this opportunity could mean for her early career in the sport. Ella left competitive swimming in 2021 to take up powerlifting at the Alpha Core Academy. Ella quickly established her place in the sport, by winning at the British Championships in October 2021, claiming all the under 18 Regional and English records. She successfully retained her title again this year and while doing so extended her records further.
Ella and her coach are now raising money to travel and prepare for the World Junior Classic Championships to be held this September. They are currently looking for sponsorship to cover the £2,500 she needs to compete successfully.

Ella Smallcombe Top 5 Powerlifter in the World in Her Weight Class
Eighteen-Year-Old Plume College student and GB Powerlifter Ella Smallcombe finished 5th in the World Junior Powerlifting Championships held in Turkey. Mr Wakefield Executive Principal said: "We are absolutely delighted and proud of what Ella has achieved. She is a fantastic and inspirational role model for all our students. Her hard work and dedication to her sport points to a fantastic future ahead."
Ella achieved an almost perfect day hitting 8 from 9 lifts. PBs across the board and regional records in the squat, bench, deadlift and total in the U18 and U23s.
