Humanities

Our Vision for Humanities

Humanities encompasses the three topics History, Geography and RE.  Humanities subjects teach us how people of different cultures and societies relate to each other and the world in which we live, or in which people have lived in the past.   Within these subjects, students will apply their direct experience of the world around them and extend their understanding of it in personal, local, national and global contexts.

 

Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Development of Students

In the Humanities  Faculty, we develop students Socially by:

  • Developing personal qualities and using social skills

  • Participating, co-operating and resolving conflicts

  • Understanding how communities and societies function

 

We develop students Morally by:

  • Developing and expressing personal views or values.

  • Investigating moral values and ethical issues.

  • Moral codes and models of moral virtue.

  • Recognising right and wrong and applying it.

  • Understanding the consequences of actions.

 

We develop students Spiritually by:

  • Developing personal values and beliefs

  • Experiencing fascination, awe and wonder

  • Exploring the values and beliefs of others

  • Understanding human feelings and emotions

  • Exploring, understanding and respecting diversity

How do we adapt our curriculum for students with SEND?

Within Humanities, students are taught in mixed ability classes across all key stages.  These groups are organised according to prior achievement.

Students are given differentiated resources in class, and within Humanities there is a specific focus on teacher intervention with pupils throughout the lessons.  Students regularly work in groups in which they are able to support each other and build confidence.

At Key Stage 4 students are given the opportunity to attend revision/catch up classes which are targeted to pupil ability.

Year 9 Combined Studies is provided for students on the pre-vocational program.   These students do a program of History, Geography and RE within one lesson per week.

WHAT WILL THE COURSE ENABLE ME TO DO?

Geography uses key skills from English, Maths and the Sciences and so sits well alongside the core subjects. For these reasons Geography demonstrates to employers that you have a well-rounded education. During your course you will be equipped with a broad range of personal learning and thinking skills such as teamwork, independent enquiry, creative thinking and analytical skills. All of these are highly valued by employers.

 

WHAT WILL THE COURSE CONTAIN?

You will study six units:-

HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

* Urban issues and challenges

* The changing economic world

* The challenge of resource management

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

* Physical landscapes in the UK

* The living world

* The challenge of natural hazards

 

You will also need to complete two compulsory days of fieldwork, together with follow up written investigations. This work will then be assessed in an examination.

 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Students complete three examinations over four hours in this course, in June of Year 11. Two of the examinations are one and a half hours long each, and will assess the Human Geography units and the Physical Geography units. The third examination is one hour long and assesses the two fieldwork investigations together with Geographical skills.

 

QUALITIES I WILL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL ON THIS COURSE?

You should have an interest in current topical issues and want to know how humans interact with the different environments our planet offers. You will need good levels of understanding in English, Maths and Science as well as being a good communicator, a problem solver and a good team player. This is a very academic specification that has been introduced for first teaching in September 2016. Please consider the challenge of four hours of examinations before applying for this course.

WHAT WILL THE COURSE ENABLE ME TO DO?

Studying GCSE History will further develop your understanding of the world around you as well as your ability to use evidence, think critically, plan and carry out research and communicate your knowledge. We want students to acquire a mental map of the past onto which they can hang future historical learning throughout their lives. History is useful for many careers including law, the police, the armed forces, business, teaching, politics, management, local government and much more. Employers value history.

 

WHAT WILL THE COURSE CONTAIN?

The course is made up of five topics, designed to cover a wide range of historical periods and types of history. Each unit makes up 20% of the GCSE and includes key historical questions:

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This is a non-tiered course therefore students have the opportunity to achieve grades 1-9.

There are three exams, all taken at the end of Year 11:

1) British History

2) History Around Us

3) World History

Religious Education

Our Curriculum Offer for Key Stage 3:

Religious Studies at the Plume is the study of the beliefs, cultures and traditions of people around the world. Students will take part in learning enquiries where the focus is on concepts and key questions. They will investigate their own life experiences, beliefs and values alongside those of the six major world religions and Humanism.

Lessons will incorporate a mixture of both independent and group tasks varying from Dragon’s Den presentations and CSI investigation work, to extended pieces of writing and reflective artwork. Students will have an assessment for every topic and home learning is regularly assigned to further students’ progress in lessons.

Exam Board information:

At KS4 students study the AQA GCSE Religion and Life Issues/Religious Expression in Society syllabus. They will sit two exams in the summer of Year 11, both worth 50% of their final grade. All students complete this full course GCSE in Religious Studies, based on one hour a week throughout Years 9-11. Listed below are the topics studied for each paper.

The AQA GCSE course encourages students to consider peoples’ beliefs about ultimate questions and how spirituality is expressed in today’s society. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of both Western and Eastern faiths; primarily Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism.

Exam Board information:

At KS5 students study the AQA GCE Religious Studies course, which is a study of the Philosophy of Religion and Religious Ethics. Within Philosophy lessons students will explore and evaluate the thoughts of influential philosophers including Aristotle, St Thomas Aquinas and David Hume. They will be asked to question the relationship between science and religion, and examine various arguments for the existence of God.  Religious Ethics involves an investigation into moral decision making and the notion of free will, with an in depth study of the ethical issues surrounding abortion and euthanasia.

Assessment is in the form of two exams sat in the summer term of Year 12 and 13. Both Philosophy and Ethics are assessed separately and are equally worth 50% of their final GCE grade.
