Plume Academy’s Rugby World Cup 2019

On Friday 25 October, Plume Academy’s years’ 7, 8 and 9 students celebrated their own Rugby World Cup Tournament!

The academy teamed up with Maldon Rugby Football Club to stage the event with the aim of celebrating the sport of rugby in its biggest competition, promoting and strengthening school/club links and giving our younger students the opportunity to take part in physical activity whilst learning and enjoying the sport itself.

Students competed alongside the Rugby World Cup with tutor groups from each year drawing countries at random to represent in the interform competition. The interform saw teams play each other in a knockout competition consisting of two rounds and a final, ‘Tri-Nations Tournament’.

Each tutor group had to choose a combination boys and girls to compete in the touch rugby matches and all students could share in the experience by completing group activities such as banner design, learning about the Rugby World Cup teams, players, the core values and becoming ‘experts’ on the country they were representing.

In the final, three winning teams from each year group competed against each other in a round-robin tournament. Volunteer coaches from Maldon Rugby Club joined in the fun and officiated the games during the afternoon. England Rugby Football Union representative Sally Tuson attended the event to support and celebrate with the competitors. Sally is a former England international and Bristol Bears and Saracens player who now plays and coaches at Thurrock RFC. Sally is also a Community Rugby Coach who supports events in the region, much like this one at our academy last week.

Plume Academy and Maldon Rugby Club are very proud of the attitude students displayed throughout this hugely successful event, which celebrated rugby, the core values of the sport and the diversity of the countries that have been performing alongside each other in the Rugby World Cup over the past seven weeks.

Plumes Sporting Siblings

Congratulations to Harry and Rebecca Wells, who have both been selected to represent Essex Hockey for their own respective age groups. Both had their first county festival last month with mixed results.

Harry’s U16/U17 Squad played three games – 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss.Rebecca’s U14 Squad played four games – 2 wins and 2 losses.Great results considering they are playing with a new team, in a mixture of positions and formations.

We are very proud of your efforts!

Interform Cross Country

On Monday 27 January and Friday 31 January the annual cross country interform competitions took place across both campuses.  Over 120 students took part in total. Mill Road students took part on the school field where they completed a 2½ km race. Fambridge Road students went off site to Beeleigh where they completed a similar distance but had the added difficulty of some very steep hills. A particular favourite is “Abbey Turning Hill” up towards Maldon Cemetery – it is quite a challenge! The students were a credit to the academy, their effort and conduct being excellent. Well done to all students who took part. Thank you also to the Sixth Form College football team for their help in marshalling the races.
