On Monday 15 November 2021, we were honoured to be visited by the Minister of State for School Standards, Mr Robin Walker MP. The Minister spent the morning visiting classes and meeting students and staff at our Mill Road Campus which hosts 610 Years’ 7 and 8 students. The Minister also met with myself and Mr Scott, our Director Finance and Premises, to discuss elements of our proposed strategic development of both campuses over the next three years.

We were also fortunate to have our local MO, Mr John Whittingdale OBE, and our Chair of Trustees, Mr Nagle, join us for the morning and for the Minister’s visit.

It was an absolute pleasure to have the Minister spend some of his precious time with us as what a truly lovely man who had time for every single student and staff member he engaged with, and did not miss asking a question on almost every single display, poster or painting he passed.

We only wish Minister Walker every success in his new, hugely important role although based on what we all were fortunate to witness yesterday, he’ll do exceptionally well!

Plume Academy Celebrates 50 Years as a Comprehensive

Plume Academy celebrated 50 years since converting from being a grammar school to embrace secondary comprehensive education.  Former students, staff along with local MP for Maldon John Whittingdale OBE and the Mayor of Maldon David Ogg and his wife Sharon Ogg were the guests of honour for an evening that saw Mr Wakefield Executive Principal host a fascinating look at the last 50 years of the Plume. With welcomed input and light-hearted reflections from the audience as they described and shared their student and staff experience from different and complimentary viewpoints, past and present.

Current Year 8 academy student Elliot Rose confidently co-hosted with Mr Wakefield,  what was a highly successful and engaging evening. Plume Academy now has a dedicated heritage and archive room that houses various memorabilia, photographs, written records, cups, shields, and other interesting artifacts which can be viewed by appointment. Former students and staff are welcome to tour the school by booking a time and day in advance with Mr Barton who is the Whole Academy Lead for Marketing, Media Communications and Community Engagement, either via email or by telephone. Details can be found on the Plume Academy website.

Tom Aldis Competes at the Highest National Level in

 The British Taekwondo Championship 2021

Year 10 student Tom Aldis who in the last month or so has just turned 15 years old, competed recently in the British Taekwondo Championships 2021. He finished in 4th position (in a new category) out of and incredible 60 competitors, many of whom were up to 18 years of age. It is an extraordinary achievement and a fantastic reward for the huge number of hours of dedication it takes to reach this level in such a tough and demanding sport. Plume Academy is very proud of what Tom has achieved and wish him  continued success for the future.

Plume Academy Supports Help Feed People in Need

Tesco and charity partners Fareshare and the Trussell Trust thank you for the very generous food and essential items donations delivered for financially challenged families, who rely on the generosity that you have shown on both campuses across the academy. Mr Wakefield formerly handed over to Tesco Community Champion Rhiain Oakley the items collected and to be shared as part of a bigger local and national initiative, that we were delighted to be associated with.
Many thanks to everyone for your very generous support to help feed people in need.

British Artistic Roller-Skating Championships Podium

Finish For Year 10 Student Benjamin Frost

Plume Academy are extremely proud of year 10 student Benjamin Frost who took part successfully against some very experienced competitors in the recent British Artistic Roller-Skating Championships 2021 . He finished on the podium in 3rd position.  A superb achievement and a fantastic reward for the hours of training and preparation to reach such an elite level. Benjamin is a keen and ambitious artistic roller skater and as such has not set any limits for the next steps that he hopes to take.

We congratulate Benjamin on this magnificent achievement and wish him all the best going forward.

GCSE Press Release - Thursday 12 August 2021

Another Group of Young People to be Exceptionally Proud of!

As was the case for our College students who received their results earlier in the week, our 300 plus Year 11 students having been through such a disruptive and hugely challenging period of time since March 2020, very much earned, as well as thoroughly deserved, the grades they received earlier this morning.

A significant number of them secured excellent results, however, some secured outcomes that will undoubtedly compare with the very best nationally. With this in mind, the following students are the class of 2016-2021 highest achievers:

  • Edward Vale – Eight grade 9s and three grade 8s

  • Emily Rose – Five grade 9s, five grade 8s and one grade 7

  • Georgia Tear – Five grade 9s, five grade 8s and one grade 7

  • Esme Bowton – Five grade 9s, four grade 8s and two grade 7s

  • Max Bailey – Three grade 9s, six grade 8s, one grade 7 and one grade 6

  • Morgan Brunt – Three grade 9s, six grade 8s, one grade 7 and one grade 6

  • Sophia Chapple – Five grade 9s, two grade 8s, three grade 7s and one grade 6

  • Ethan Stead – Four grade 9s, three grade 8s, two grade 7s and two grade 6s

  • Toby Hawkes – Three grade 9s, four grade 8s, three grade 7s and one grade 4

  • Bobby Priest – Two grade 9s, one grade 8, seven grade 7s and one grade 6

Carl Wakefield, Executive Principal, said, “First of all, it was absolutely brilliant to see so many of our Year 11 students and their families this morning and the atmosphere was arguably the best I have ever encountered after nearly three decades of having the privilege of attending mornings of such magnitude. As a direct result, the feeling of absolute pride that started on Tuesday morning when we distributed our College students’ results has only continued into today and in relation to this massive cohort of 300 plus students. This is for a multitude of reasons including their superb set of outcomes they worked exceptionally hard to achieve of course – outcomes that culminated in well over 3000 individual grades being handed out today. However, what has been equally as satisfying and that generated as much pride as any other aspect relating to today is how this cohort of students conducted themselves throughout the most challenging, demanding and turbulent period of time the vast majority of us have ever encountered.”

“Throughout that 15-month period, no matter what they had to face up to, overcome or what was asked of them, successfully and diligently work through it they did. Equally as pleasing was that they did it together, in conjunction with our fantastic team of staff who worked tirelessly in support of them, and without any form of fuss or expected fanfare – something else that I feel very much sums up this particular cohort of young adults.”

“Therefore, not only did they secure the outstanding grades they were always destined to achieve no matter what process they had to work through, to me, they never failed to model only the highest of standards to their younger peers in everything from behaviour to uniform expectations, and resilience to aspiration.”

“It was also an honour to be a parent of a student in this particular cohort and my wife and I wholeheartedly thank our son’s teaching and support staff for everything they did for him since he joined the academy at the end of Year 7.”

“I also had the pleasure of teaching various groups from within this cohort across three subject areas during their time at the academy. I have many fond memories of these lessons and primarily because of the students’ attitudes, approach, input and enthusiasm shown in every single lesson we spent together.”

“Whilst record numbers will now be staying on with us and progressing into our College, I will conclude by wishing those students and their respective families – families who have themselves been excellent in terms of their supportive approach over the past five years and which was only further evidenced this morning - who will be moving on all the very best for what I hope will be an enjoyable, happy and ultimately, successful future.”

“I will miss you greatly but please remember that you will always be part of a very special family – The Plume Family!”

Due to the unprecedented circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020, the formal examinations due to be sat by Years’ 11, 12 and 13 students were cancelled as they were last year. Whilst last year’s no-notice cancellation on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 March 2020 left students, staff and parents and carers feeling shocked as well as in some cases, somewhat devastated, a great deal of hard work subsequently occurred from the academy’s team of staff to ensure the Centre Assessed Grades (CAGs) process was successfully completed.

However, this year’s Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) process has proven even more challenging for students and staff alike - for multiple reasons and through absolutely no fault of their own either. Nevertheless, and as I knew they always would, our students and staff, supported by our associated families again, as is invariably the case, worked incredibly hard and in collaboration, particularly throughout a hugely pressurised March – May 2021 period when the regulatory bodies and examination boards kept adding to what was required from schools and their students on an almost daily basis.

Sitting examinations in the traditional manner would have been stressful enough for these young people, however, losing the chance to prove what they could achieve in a formal setting, in addition to having to go through two lengthy national lockdown periods, left many feeling somewhat despondent at times. However, it must also be noted that many students fed back that they actually preferred the TAGs process as rather than sitting a one-off examination series over a five-week period, they felt they were able to basically have a better opportunity of getting out exactly what they put in through the additional work they were able to complete over the course of those last three months prior to their grades being submitted.

Nevertheless, and despite these significant and somewhat unique challenges, the Plume Family congratulate our post-16 students and their respective staff for what they have still achieved despite the enormity of the challenge over the past 17 months. We also wish them every success as they progress onto the next stage of their education, employment or training.

Once again, virtually all of our Year 13 students also secured the grades to progress onto their first choice university, their carefully selected apprenticeships as well as their provisionally offered employment.

Carl Wakefield, Executive Principal of Plume Academy said, “First of all, it was absolutely fantastic to see so many of our College students this morning and as expected, they conducted themselves in their usual dignified, mature, sensible and articulate manner. However, I was far from surprised as this is how they have been throughout this unprecedented period they have had to live and work through since March 2020.”

“The vast majority have automatically secured what they need to progress onto the next stage of their education, employment or training and for this cohort in particular, such an achievement should not go without huge adulation and respect again, for the enormous amount of work they have had to do as well as the extremely stressful period of time they have had to endure”.

“I will conclude by saying how immensely proud I am of not only this fantastic cohort of students, but also our tremendous team of staff who have also worked incredibly hard and in collaboration with them throughout their post-16 journey – work that was often done, due to the ever-changing, short-notice expectations from the external examination regulatory authorities, during evenings, weekends and throughout, once again, their Easter and May half term breaks.”

“Both sets of stakeholders are a credit to themselves and the academy as are our students’ families who throughout the lockdown period have been nothing but relentlessly positive and supportive. For this, I wholeheartedly thank them”.
